What is Chia Seed

Chia seeds are small black and white seeds High in Omega 3 & Fibre and are a great source of Protein, Vitamins and Minerals. Chia is a fantastic little seed to boost the nutritional profile of meals and snacks without affecting the flavour of the dish!

Whole chia seed has a soft outer shell which are bodies can easily break down and absorb the nutrients. The only difference between the whole black and whole white seed is the colour! We create the milled seed and milled fruit mixes in our production facility, we mill the whole seeds using a cold-milling process so that no nutrients are lost. So if you are wondering which is better for you, it really is a case of personal preference – do you like the crunch of the whole seed or the flour like consistency of milled chia? The milled and fruit mixes are a great way to hide extra nutrition in kids’ meals!

Daily Serving

We recommend a daily serving of 15g (1 tablespoon) of chia seed a day. Just add chia to your favourite foods or drinks and enjoy as part of a varied and balanced diet and a healthy lifestyle.

Top tip: Chia seed is hydrophilic (it absorbs liquid) and full of fibre so you should drink plenty of water when consuming it.

Quality of Chia

We are committed to the quality of our chia seeds. We have a long-term relationship with suppliers in South America to ensure the highest quality standards are met.

Further to this, we nutritionally analyse each batch of seeds to ensure they meet our strict nutritional criteria. Chia seeds are always black or white in colour, never brown. The brown seeds are immature and don’t have the high levels of Omega 3 mature seeds contain.

By buying Chia Bia branded seeds, we guarantee that the seeds you buy are high in Omega 3 and other nutrients.

Origin of Chia

Chia seeds are harvested from a purple and white flowering plant called the Salvia hispanica L. It is grown across South & Central America where proximity to the equator makes for ideal growing conditions. This plant is a member of the mint family, Lamiaceae, which acts as a natural repellent to insects. Chia absorbs up to ten times its weight in water, which is ideal for a plant that grows in the desert!

Chia has a long history! Chia seeds are an ancient food of the Aztecs, used for centuries as a medicine, energy enhancer, and endurance food. They were used by the mighty warriors to fuel epic battles across the canyons of Southern Mexico and Guatemala. The seeds were thought to have great healing powers and were so valued that they were even used as offerings to their gods. But then the Spanish Conquistadors arrived and destroyed the crops and the mighty chia seed disappeared along with the Aztecs! Until of course they were rediscovered recently and started being grown commercially so that people worldwide could benefit from the goodness of the seed.
